When We Are Married 3rd-5th October 2019

Copthorne Players’ latest offering is the classic JB Priestly comedy, When We Are Married. Audiences will remember with pleasure the last Priestly play we did, that old favourite An Inspector Calls, but this an altogether different – and funny – play.

Three happily married couples. Sure Joe and Albert are a bit conceited, maybe a bit overbearing the way that men are, maybe Clara does henpeck her spouse a bit, maybe their other halves are a bit trapped, a bit put upon, but hey, this is a celebration of twenty five year of marriage. But then maybe Fate will take a hand and give them all a second chance.

When We Are Married may be less well known but has hardly been off the stage since it was first produced back in 1938. Its last West End outing was at the Garrick Theatre in 2011 but it’s been a film, produced by the BBC at least three times and employed such stars as Maureen Lipman, Peter Vaughan, Beryl Reid, Bernard Cribbins, Alan Bennett,Timothy West and Roy Hudd.

Despite the changing times, it comes over as fresh as the time it was minted. It’s a funny play, lots of classic characters: the seaside photographer, the pompous vicar, the young couple, the naïve pot girl, the acid tongued harridan, the floozy with a heart of gold.  It has a great plot but is also insightful – look what may happen when we take our spouses for granted….

The Village Hall offers a great play with a really strong cast. Come along, you’ll enjoy it!
